The
Thoth Tarot Deck
Written by
Aleister Crowley.
Illustrated by Lady Frieda Harris.
Obviously this is probably one of
the most profound and artistic renditions of the tarot to date. Many
years of work went into creating this deck and many different variations
of each individual card were made in an effort to get the cards just
right. Because of the nature of Aleister Crowley, I really debated
if a review of this deck would be appropriate on this site. Although
I do not support his thinking or his workings, I really feel that without
including this deck for review I would really be leaving a major
accomplishment out of reach. The cards are just incredible, and the
artist Lady Frieda Harris has really outdone herself with her use of
color, art, and symbolism. Some of the cards have an extremely
pessimistic feel, but not without just cause. The symbolism is deep
and most likely would not be picked up on by novice readers. By far this
deck is definitely for the more advanced reader. Of all the work
that Crowley has put his energy in, this by far has to be the most
positive, however most credit should go to Miss Harris for her
determination and bold representations of the tarot cards themselves.
This deck uses standard suits
Wands, Swords, Cups with the exception of Disks in place of the suit of
Pentacles. The court cards also stray off the standard use and this deck
uses Princes, Princess's, Knights, and Queens. This deck also
exchanges trump cards for more modern and direct references such as, Lust,
Art, Aeon, Universe, and Magus. The cards come in various different
sizes, and seem to be a little more square then standard tarot cards.
Overall, a completely practical and artistic deck.
